| N.B. and Sarah H. Wiggington were members of Highland Baptist Church. In their will they left a trust fund intended to be used to help in the care and housing for indigent men in Jefferson County, Kentucky. This ultimately resulted in the beginning of our present work. In an older residence on Third Street in downtown Louisville. The N.B. and and Sarah H. Wiggington home was begun. The home had a small population of those we would now call street people, senior men who had no home and no way to really take care of themselves. This was a successful effort but it quickly became obvious that there were more needs to be served in larger quarters and there were ladies who also needed this kind of care. | |||||||||
| In
1979, under the leadership of Cornell Snow, who was then President of the
group operating the home, Baptist Home East Nursing Home opened on Hurstbourne
Parkway, then Hounz Lane, in eastern Jefferson County. BHE opened with 90
nursing home beds and 20 personal care beds The personal care beds in the
home have been moved to our new Parrs at Springhurst building and
the nursing homes 90 remaining beds now include 16 private rooms and
37 semi-private rooms serving the health and rehab needs of our residents.
The Wiggington Trust with its limited resources, still subsidizes a portion
of that personal care population which moved from BHE to Parrs at
Springhurst when those residents own financial resources will not
cover their costs of care. |
